Herb Washington: Baseball’s Only Designated Runner Tells Hilarious Story

World-class sprinter Herb Washington signed a baseball contract with Oakland A’s owner Charlie Finley to be a “designated runner.” He appeared in 105 games and never batted, pitched or played in the field.

Washington explains that the contract had a rather unusual extra clause.
